In honour of National Breastfeeding Month & Breastfeeding Awareness Week, SunChild dedicating our thoughts, words and actions to celebrating, normalising and educating women (and men!) on the power of the female form.
A mother’s body is so incredible. In a supportive and nurtured environment, it can produce exactly what her child needs, when he or she needs it. We’re talking about breastmilk – the perfect combination of fat, protein and carbs – delivered to little ones in the exact amount and temperature the baby needs. Breastmilk even contains hormones that change from day to night, helping a child adjust to circadian rhythms and maintain a general sense of calm and ease (not always effortless when it comes to little ones!). Is there anything else more sacred or worth celebrating?!
The importance of breastfeeding goes beyond its nutritional benefits. The experience itself can create a unique bond between mother and baby. A bond like no other! You are truly their giver and their provider – surrendering your needs in order for their nourishment. Nursing your child is a service of unconditional love – and one that is honoured in so many ancient, respected traditions.
With all this in mind, breastfeeding is not always easy or natural for mums. Many find it a struggle – painful or frustrating. If this is the case, remember, you are not alone. The journey through motherhood is a challenging, but deeply rewarding one. Know that it is OK to ask for help to heal inflammation and soothe any pain. If your baby isn’t latching, your nipples feel raw or when everything’s working as it should, but you still feel off… There is always help and support available.
Breastfeeding is a natural and wondrous experience for the whole family. It can bring parents and their new babies closer than ever, strengthening the bound even more so. I hope that together, we can normalise the way we choose to feed our child and remind women of the intuitive intelligence our bodies hold, without the need for force. You are part of this sacred experience – one to celebrate and revere – not one to fear but love.
